We are what we eat. This is a phrase you have probably heard before, and it rings true when it comes to our bodies. You need certain nutrients in order to maintain healthy cells, organs, muscles, bones, skin, and hair! If you want to be the best version of yourself possible, then start by eating more nutritious foods! Here are four nutrients that your body needs every day.
#1 Protein
It is necessary to maintain healthy cells, tissues, and muscles. Protein also keeps you full, so you are less likely to overeat! Try lean meat like chicken, turkey, fish (like salmon), or beans for protein. You can see from these ideas that both animal and plant sources of protein can be included in a healthy diet. These proteins work perfectly with some starch like super easy slow cooker mashed potatoes. Protein is made up of amino acids, and some of these are considered essential nutrients, meaning that your body cannot make them in sufficient amounts. Protein helps you feel full for longer periods and can help build and maintain muscles, healthy bones, skin, and hair!
#2 Fiber
Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that is important to the body; it helps keep you regular and regulates blood sugars. Fiber also slows down digestion which can help prevent weight gain! Try eating more vegetables like leafy greens (kale), broccoli, asparagus, or cauliflower for fiber. These are just some examples of foods that contain high amounts of fiber.
Do not forget about fruits either! Many fruits have a good amount of fiber in them too. Fruits with a good amount of fiber include oranges, apples, and berries. I like to incorporate fruit into my desserts for some sweets with little to no sugar. Find my list of quick easy desserts here.
#3 Water
Water is essential to keep the body functioning properly. Water regulates temperature, carries nutrients through the bloodstream, and removes waste from cells! However, it can be hard for many people to drink enough water every day because we live in a society where other options like soda or juice are much more accessible.
Some high water content foods include cucumbers, celery, grapefruit and tomatoes. So the next time you reach for that sugary soft drink, think about how it affects your health and remember the healthier alternatives.
#4 Omega-3 fatty acids
Fish are a great source of omega fatty acids, which have been shown to help with brain function and cardiovascular health. Omega-fatty acids can be found in fish like salmon or tuna! You do not need to go fishing every day, but adding more of these healthy fats into your diet is important for promoting overall health. Foods that contain omega-fatty acids include halibut, trout & sardines.
In conclusion, these are four nutrients you should ingest every day. Healthy eating habits will improve the quality of life when it comes to living well at any age. These will keep your body strong and healthy so that you can live the best life possible!

I don’t think it can be stated enough just how important water is to the body’s day-to-day functions. Slacking on hydration can have negative implications in the long run.
Thanks so much for your comment, Carola. Yes, and it’s so easy to get dehydrated. There are so many interesting water bottles out there that help you keep track of intake, and I think those are a great tool.
