About me...

I am an Associate Professor in the nutrition field at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. I am also a registered dietitian and completed my dietetic internship at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

I LOVE to eat. I especially love trying new foods; on my first visit to Hawai‘i, I was eager to try lau lau, squid luau and poi. I also have a sweet tooth and love nutritious desserts (think blended frozen banana, almond milk, matcha powder). My other passion is fitness; in my free time, I love to explore new hiking trails.

I’m excited to share information about food and health to spread the joy of eating. Yes, it IS possible to enjoy both your food and your health to the max!

My philosophy

Our food environment is not easy to navigate, with lots of cheap, poor quality food available. The choices we make may leave us with an unhealthy weight and feelings of self-doubt and frustration. I believe that everyone should have the tools to make the best food choices, and it’s my goal to help provide those. Here are some important principles guiding my work:

Small changes are important

If you are looking to make changes to your diet, it’s important to start small. See if you can replace a highly processed treat with another tasty treat with less added fat, sugar or sodium, for example.

Healthy eating is a lifestyle

Changes made should be sustainable–I believe in the importance of forming lifelong habits that will never feel like a “diet.”

“Cheat days” should not exist

If you develop habits that work for you and can transform your choices to improve your diet, you will not feel the need to “cheat.” The food you eat on a day-to-day basis will be satisfying and healthful.

Eating brings joy

When you eat, it should be a pleasurable experience, not only due to the taste, but also due to the knowledge that you are caring for your body. When eating wholesome and tasty food, the experience should bring joy.
