Group nutrition coaching

Somewhere along the way, many people find their diet is lacking, and even worse, harming their health. They may have spent a long time trying lots of diets and trying to cook healthfully and throw out the not-so-healthy food. But, alone and without the right tools, it just gets harder. They gain more weight, eat out of stress and feel stuck in a rut when it comes to diet and food choices. No matter what new diet they try, it fails. It doesn’t have to be this way, and there is a simple solution they are missing!

Eating a healthful, varied and pleasurable diet doesn’t have to be so hard. It’s just when you have years of habits built up, plus inaccurate nutrition and diet information thrown in, it can be hard to know how to start. With the right information, support and tools, it is completely possible to have a diet that allows you to maintain or arrive at a healthy weight, feel energized and nourished, and, most of all, enjoy eating!

It’s time to learn how to eat in a healthful, enjoyable way—one that doesn’t involve punishing diets, restrictions or complicated recipes. We all have to eat, and most of us haven’t been taught the way to eat that will lead us to good health, vitality and satisfaction. If you don’t learn to eat in a healthy way that you can maintain, unfortunately, you may be at risk for chronic, lifelong diseases like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attack and more.

You can start to look forward to mealtime, and even enjoy preparing your food! You’ll have the science-based knowledge to feel confident in your choices, plus the support and encouragement of a registered dietitian and professor of nutrition, so that you can’t go wrong. You’ll learn how to transition to a diet that works for you, for the long term, and that allows you to lose any excess weight you may have. Feel good in your body and mind, and get ready to embrace this 3x daily ritual that we all have to engage in called eating…instead of it being a chore, it will be a highlight of your day, a moment of relaxation and enjoyment that simultaneously reinforces your health. What could be better than that?

I want to share more about the coaching, but first, a little story about me and my mission to help others eat for health. I’m a registered dietitian and professor of nutrition, and each time I’m at a party or gathering and someone asks what I do, it’s almost guaranteed I’ll then receive a barrage of questions following my admission that I’m a dietitian: “I’ve seen a new mayonnaise-replacement food at the supermarket, is that a healthy option?” “I’ve been trying to lose weight for years but I can’t seem to consistently keep it off. What should I do?” “My husband has high cholesterol and refuses to change his diet. How can I help him?”

From the endless questions I receive, it’s clear that there’s a lot of confusion around what is healthy to eat, in what quantity and when! In fact, many of the questions are complex to answer quickly, as to understand the answer, it’s important to understand the basics of nutrition as well as the research being done in nutrition on various topics.

After fielding these questions for many years, I realized how important it is for people struggling with nutrition to have a “translator,” helping them to make good food choices easy with the right knowledge, explanations and suggestions. After teaching basic nutrition to hundreds of undergraduates, engaging in nutrition research myself and applying the knowledge to my own diet, I’m in an ideal position to help people who are busy, don’t have special training in nutrition and need to improve their nutrition for health, vitality and wellness.

Now that you know a bit more about me and my motivation to coach others, let me share about the coaching program itself.

In the group coaching, I’m going to break it down for you into easy, bite-size pieces. You’ll be able to make simple yet powerful changes to your diet, food selection and nutrition that will transform your relationship to healthy eating and help you to lose the weight you don’t need. Very importantly, you’ll also receive support and encouragement to stick with it—as I know how hard it can be to make changes and feel confident enough to continue.

That’s why I made the coaching 6 weeks long, so we’ll have plenty of time to dig deep into what you need to know and make sure the changes are sticking for you. Here are the topics we’ll cover by week:

  • Week 1: Small shifts toward a healthy diet
  • Week 2: Nutrient intake and health
  • Week 3: Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Week 4: Using food labels
  • Week 5: Eating well while dining out
  • Week 6: Evaluating nutrition information in the media

Now, you might still be wondering, “But is this group coaching the right choice for me?” I want to make it an easy and clear decision for you, so I’ve laid out exactly who this coaching is or isn’t for.

Okay, now that I’ve covered who the coaching is and isn’t for, I’d like to tell you more about me. I’ve gained the qualifications and experience to help you, and I want you to feel completely at ease trusting my nutritional information and suggestions. Here are some things you should know about me:

  • I’m an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and started my job there in 2012.
  • I’ve taught more than 1000 students the basics of nutrition and beyond.
  • I’m also a registered dietitian, certified since 2010.
  • I’ve read hundreds of food labels and know and understand your struggles about healthy eating, maintaining a healthy weight and having energy for living!

This last point is really important to me. Many of the foods we find in the supermarket and elsewhere were not manufactured with your best interests at heart. Not only that, but the details  presented on the label are often not very clear and make it very confusing to choose healthful foods. We’re going to cover in detail in the group coaching what nutrients you need, what ingredients you may want to limit and how to tell the difference between healthful and not-so-healthful products. (And, what to do if your favorites are not-so-healthful!)
